Private Equity heads further into insurance investingPosted by: in Financials and AnalyticalsFiled under: Deals, Financials and analyticals, Private equity industry, Investments, Value and lack thereof, Public or private? There is a rather interesting deal out there that can be viewed as a glass half-full or glass half-empty depending on whether or not you are from the private equity side or from a public company. Fiserv Inc. (NASDAQ: FISV) has announced a rather interesting move this morning. It is selling a majority interest in its insurance business operations for some $510 million in equity and debt to Trident IV, a private equity fund managed by Stone Point Capital LLC. The company has announced that it will turn around and repurchase up to 10 million shares of common stock in a repurchase program. Sourceforge Community Choice finalists: Some curious choicesPosted by: admin in Business and PoliticsSourceforge.net has announced its 2008 Community Choice finalists, and includes a wide range of projects that I’m seeing for the first time. Sure, there are old favorites like OpenOffice and Firebird, but when was the last time you used Sphinx (SQL full-text search engine), FreeMind (mind mapper), or Habari (next-generation blogging platform)? Some of the finalists - or, rather where they were voted - are quite silly. Under the “Most Likely to Be the Next $1B Acquisition” category, only a small fraction of the candidates are actually corporations capable of being purchased for $1 billion. (Zenoss, Magento, and Talend welcome your $1 billion. Others are a little closer to the truth. Under “Most Prone to Change the World,” Linux and Ubuntu both feature, though arguably they already have. OpenOffice also features there but, come on, if it hasn’t changed the world by now, why should we anticipate it to do so tomorrow?

Dave Lilly, CEO of GroundWork (Credit: GroundWork) I caught up with Dave Lilly, founder and CEO of GroundWork, earlier this week to see how things are going. Lilly recently replaced GroundWorks’ former CEO, Ranga Rangachari, and I was interested to hear about the changes at GroundWork. GroundWork is an open-source network management company that ostensibly competes with Hyperic, Zenoss, and other open-source IT management companies, but it seems that GroundWork (as well as these others) tends to be a replacement or complement to the massive proprietary offerings from HP, BMC, and others. What has Dave been working on in his first few months as CEO?
Interesting. How has this move into the enterprise affected your work with other open-source projects, specifically Nagio? I’ve seen some announcements from you and Nagios over the past few months; can you clarify your relationship with Nagios and some of the other open-source projects out there? In math, two negatives make a positive. In the fledgling world of desktop Linux, unfortunately, this is unlikely to be the case. According to reports from OStatic and others, Xandros is buying Linspire. Who cares, you ask? Certainly not the former CEO of Linspire, Kevin Carmony, who had this to state …
