FarFinder is a file sharing tool from the maker of Webjimbo (our coverage). Like the latter, FarFinder basically turns your Mac into a web server, but instead of serving up your notes from Yojimbo it instead serves up web pages that look like Finder windows. Using any web browser (Mac, PC, iPhone, etc.) you can easily download files from your home computer. And since dynamic IP addresses are a problem for many home users the service includes an optional stable URL through Flying Mac’s servers.

While Back to My Mac and various VNC screen sharing options are available, FarFinder’s promised straightforward ease of use both on the Mac server and on the other end in the browser definitely has a certain appeal.

FarFinder is $35 and a demo is available from Flying Mac.

More good stuff from The VAR Guy this day, this time on the likelihood that virtualization is starting to harm server sales:

Each time The VAR Guy talks with a CIO or solutions provider, he hears about yet another server consolidation project. Through virtualization and more effective storage management, companies can simplify their data centers while raising server utilization rates….The VAR Guy doesn’t think the economy is destroying server sales. Rather, businesses are becoming far more efficient at leveraging the servers they already have.

This is difficult for an established server vendor to accept, but I suspect it’s an opportunity for any new entrant to the market. On the Linux side, this includes both Novell and Ubuntu. Yes, Novell has been around for a long time, but its server sales are still nascent. As for Ubuntu, its primary task is to take a stick to the incumbents. Incorporating virtualization into its business model may help.

It’s official. Mark Shuttleworth (Ubuntu) and I are going to be in Buenos Aires on August 14 through 15. I’m corresponding with several of you about putting together a community event there (or more). Mark is obviously the huge draw, so let’s put together some cool gatherings …

John Gruber’s (and my) favorite Twitter web app for the iPhone is about to get better — if you’ve been on the Hahlo for iPhone homepage lately, you’ll have seen that Dean Robinson is working on version 3 of Hahlo (titled, hilariously for us gamers, the Legendary Edition).

TUAW got to take a look (along with all of the other beta users) at the new software, and here’s a short preview running through what the new Hahlo will look like, as well as updates to the system, including a brand new Settings page, inline replies, hashtags and searching, and lots of other cool tweaks and updates.

Our preview starts right after the jump.

In a report from the Financial Times, Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. (NYSE: MER) is holding talks with TPG to discuss closer ties. This might include the possibility of the private equity firm potentially investing in Merrill Lynch if the investment bank needs more capital. John Thain met with key executives from TPG according to the report.

The companies have apparently been in discussions since last fall. One affiliate had offered to put in as much as $3 billion into Merrill Lynch. Merrill Lynch raised some $12+ billion in funds elsewhere for different terms.

What is interesting here is that the article also notes that TPG doesn’t want to appear too close with Merrill Lynch, because of the appearance of being too close and (and therefor a competitor).

The company has also raised additional funds this month by selling fixed income and preferred securities.

John Thain’s suspenders and belt might be a tiny tighter since he went on record saying Merrill Lynch will not need any more capital.

MSPmentor is reporting that Red Hat has quietly been adding positions that indicate increased attention to the hosting and managed services market. Red Hat, which does 54 percent of its business through its partner channel, looks to be trying to increase that ratio further.

Red Hat…has created two staff positions to serve hosting partners. Plus, Red Hat is evaluating a strategy to work more closely with managed service providers, MSPmentor has learned….

In current months, Red Hat has received a growing number of inquiries from hosting and managed services partners, according to Mark Enzweiler, vice president of channel sales at Red Hat. Attune to the trend, Enzweiler created a new management position at Red Hat last year, in order to superior serve hosting partners.

In an attempt to turn this blog into a gossip rag, I’m going to “start” posting unsubstantiated (Meaning, true or almost certainly true but with sources that I can’t reveal) rumors. Fiction is always more fun. :-)

In this case, however, it’s the truth. First in line …

As but one more piece of testamentary evidence that the old guard at Microsoft needs to be shown the door, Bill Gates has demonstrated conclusively that he has exactly zero understanding of open source, or at least zero desire to have an intelligent discussion about it. Speaking to a pharmaceutical industry group, Bill Gates took time out to utter irrelevancies and inaccuracies about the GNU General Public License:

There’s free software and then there’s open source,” he recommended, noting that Microsoft gives away its software in developing countries [largely in response to open source, I might add]. With open source software, on the other hand, “there is this thing called the GPL, which we disagree with.” Open source, he said, creates a license “so that nobody can ever improve the software,” he claimed, bemoaning the squandered opportunity for jobs and business.

Ahem. It’s the exact opposite, Mr. Gates. 100% the exact opposite.

I just spotted DataSync’s news that it now offers full Blackberry BES sync support for Zimbra and SugarCRM. I no longer use a Blackberry, but for those enterprises (like mine) that use SugarCRM and Zimbra, this will no doubt be a large benefit.

For those who have been frustrated by NotifyLink (Hear! Hear!), the product is still in beta but promises to be better than the mostly lame NotifyLink service:

Zimbra is currently in “beta” BlackBerry support mode, however we have had a very solid response over the past 30 days in our test environment. We’ve decided to offer this service commercially because of the overall stability of the system.
