Paula Rooney of ZDNet has some bad news for those promoting Linux. According to a Gartner report, Linux’s cost advantages are soon to dissipate and software as a service will soon eclipse Linux as “the preferred IT cost-cutting method” (by 2013).

If true, in both cases Linux and open source win. What’s not to love?

In the first instance, open source long ago ceased to be dependent on winning through cheapness. Yes, many CIOs still look to open source to deliver cost savings, but people aren’t switching to Novell and Red Hat to save a buck, just as few (if any) have outright dumped Red Hat’s for Oracle’s discount Unbreakable Linux.

It’s not about a price tag. It’s about value, as Red Hat’s Michael Tiemann emphatically said at OSCON a few years back.

If Linux’s TCO goes up relative to its proprietary competition, so has its value. Perhaps Gartner is simply predicting that Linux vendors will finally get paid their due?

I had breakfast with Scott Switzer, CTO of OpenX, in New York yesterday, and spoke at Dave Rosenberg’s MuleSource conference this day, where I had the chance to talk with Dave, Larry Augustin, and others from the open-source world. One thing seems fairly clear to me:

Done right, most open-source companies face a two-horse race: the leading open-source vendor against the leading proprietary vendor.

Reality is not so clean, of course. There are still a range of leftover incumbents from software’s heady days of massive license fees, which will endure for some time. But these are simple fodder for the large proprietary companies to either mow down or acquire, and for open-source companies to undermine on their way to market penetration.

Good marketing leaves just two competitors standing. The reality is that there will be one (or, at most, two) strong open-source offerings duking it out with one (or, at most, two) strong proprietary offerings. Each time someone talks up Tibco in an article, you want the journalist remembering that MuleSource is on its heels. The same is true for all open-source projects.

It’s possible that the Linux desktop will never be anything more than a fad among geeky enthusiasts. If so, a growing swell of people appear to be much more faddish of late, as numbers from W3Counter.com appear to indicate.

Looking at the data, Linux clearly has a ways to go. But think about just how far it has come:
