Lots of great news today, though not much that relates to open source, per se. First of all, it’s interesting to see that the average web page size has tripled since 2003. Why? No reasons are given, but the data is highly interesting. Have a look.

The US has released a list of the worst companies

Apple Television Source notes that the latest 2.0.2 update makes internet radio work a little better with the Apple TV. Basically you can play world wide web radio streams on the Apple TV if you’ve it synced to an iTunes computer with a playlist containing the streams. Before the update the source computer had to be on for this to work. Now, however, the Apple TV will retain the playlist even without the iTunes personal until it is restarted (it will retain the playlists even if put to sleep). The original post has complete instructions.

It was bound to happen. Long relegated to the software world, it was just a matter of time before open source stormed the kitchen to dominate our cuisine. In a sign of the times, Tcho’s Chocolate.com is using “open-source” techniques to make chocolate taste better:

ExtJS is a cool JavaScript framework for writing web applications. It is, quite possibly, the best of its kind. My own engineers were salivating at the chance to use it.

Unfortunately, ExtJS is of many minds when it comes to licensing its product. It pretended that the software was LGPL, but only insofar as that meant many people using it…and many people paying to use it. (Hint to the ExtJS business team: LGPL and Apache licenses are impotent to compel payment.)

The company took the hint, re-releasing the code under GPLv3, causing consternation in some quarters. Why the concern? Well, because it meant that freeriders would now clearly have to pay, or distribute their own software under the GPL. Many don’t like having to pay for value, particularly if it’s GPL’d.

All of which has caused some to fork the ExtJS project. Given the dubious open-source provenance of ExtJS, this is not as simple (or advisable) as it might appear. If ExtJS were never truly LGPL, as the messed-up licensing would seem to advocate, then forking a proprietary product is called…copyright infringement.

It didn’t have to be this way.

A friend sent me his thoughts on virtualization and its effects on the software industry. As he sees it, virtualization may well play a role far beyond the operating system vendors, a group I had focused a post on. It could have a deleterious effect on a wide range of business models.

Why do enterprises purchase into virtualization? Primarily to make more efficient use of their existing servers. Most proprietary vendors license their products on a per-CPU basis, and have increasingly shifted to maintenance contracts as a way to boost revenue as upfront licensing costs dwindle in a market that favors spreading out payments via SaaS and open source.

My friend’s insight?

Long-term revenue is a function of the number of CPUs running their products at their customers’ IT shops.

So, as more and more enterprises embrace virtualization to increase the efficiency of the servers they’ve already licensed, maintenance revenue might well plunge with new license revenue.

Red Hat offering "open" IBM Lotus Domino

(Credit: Red Hat)

Ah, how the mighty have fallen. In what must have been gross oversight, Red Hat is pitching proprietary software on its website under the banner of “No vendor lock-in.” The way Red Hat and IBM make it appear, simply running one’s software on an open platform like Linux magically removes the proprietary lock-in of the application.

I hate to say this, Red Hat, but it just doesn’t work that way. Last time I checked, IBM’s Lotus Domino is proprietary software and running it on Linux hasn’t changed that fact.

If it did, we’d be calling Microsoft Office open source (Hey, it runs on Linux via WINE) and a whole host of other things “open” and “lock-in free.”

Red Hat’s positioning of IBM’s software on its site is oddly out of character with the open-source leader:

I’m helping to edit what’s turning out to be a shockingly good book on the legal issues around open source, from the developer’s perspective, which Van Lindberg is finishing up and which O’Reilly will be publishing. When it comes out, you will want to purchase it. It’s incredibly well-written and expresses things much more clearly than I’ve yet seen in my 10 years within the open-source community.

As a case in point, Van explicates the Great Divide between those who love and loathe the GPL by citing a post on the Python mailing list about a controversial bit of code called setuptools:

[T]his information is VERY helpful. It makes it blindingly obvious to me now that the difference between loving and hating setuptools is whether you’re *intentionally* using it, or whether it shows up in your ecosystem uninvited….
