 Whenever a new browser version rolls out, the engineers responsible for plugins and enhancements turn on the espresso machines for the coming all-nighters as they rejigger their products for the latest and greatest. In the case of Safari 3.1, the wait for an updated 1Password version was quite short; the new build is downloadable this day from Agile’s site.
In addition to the compatibility fix in 2.5.12, there are a slew of new features and enhancements to the indispensable password manager for web forms; full list over here. My favorite ones: an option to replace an existing saved login, and a Leopard-standard integrated help system. Palm users will also see dramatic improvements to the 1Password features for the once-leading PDA platform.
New licenses of 1Password are $29.95 (not $39.95 as I said a second ago).

 How I miss the days of Ramen noodles, sleepless nights and self-indulgent college rock. If you’re like me, check out the updated “College Radio” section of iTunes. Just click the radio icon in the sidebar (not the iTunes Store) to reveal the College Radio section (it bore a beta tag until I checked again this morning).
Just a dozen stations are represented, including WLMU at Le Moyne College and WMHB from Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
Unfortunately for me, my own alma mater’s fantastic station isn’t in the list. That’s too bad, as I like a side order of nostalgia with my morning coffee.

 In keeping with the 2008 tradition of Tuesday morning updates, Apple released Safari 3.1 today for both OS X and Windows — marking the transition out of beta status for the Windows build. At 143MB (for the Leopard version, at least), there’s a lot of changes, including
- Improved JavaScript performance
- Standards support, including CSS 3 web fonts, HTML 5 video and audio elements, and SVG advanced text
- Developer benefits like editing CSS in the Web Inspector
- Caps lock alert in password fields (Yay!)
There’s much more, of course, and you can read the full change log here. Note that installation requires a restart. Apple’s page describes Safari as “the world’s fastest browser,” but of course your mileage might vary.

First and foremost, calling this JP Morgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) $236 million purchase of Bear Stearns (NYSE: BSC) an acquisition is a stretch beyond what words can state. The $2.00 per share offer is perhaps the biggest fleecing of a deal ever. You probably heard takeover rumors on Friday regarding Bear Stearns. Well, this weekend it’s true. The exception is that this is a take-under of the largest magnitude seen in the industry over at least the last two decades.
Frankly, the office building in New York alone is worth more than that. Add on the prime brokerage business. Then add on its equity underwriting business. The problem is all of its counter-party and derivative operations where the liabilities can theoretically never end on the fixed income side.
Back in January when the bad financial institution situation went from bad to worse, I noted that financial mergers might be mandated rather than preferred. Do the math. The Fed is providing financing for up to $30 Billion of Bear’s less liquid assets, and close to $20 billion appears to be for mortgage related assets. Jamie Dimon and friends are stepping in for a fraction of what this used to be. $2.00 this day, $30 on Friday, more than $60.00 a week ago and over $150.00 a year ago.
Many will try comparing this to Drexel Burnham Lambert implosion. That company wasn’t public. That company was more of a junk bond player that didn’t create as much of a systemic failure risk compared to this. You can’t blame Jamie Dimon for being opportunistic like this, but the management team at Bear Stearns just got scarred for life.
Bear Stearns at first wasn’t able to cease this run on the bank that happened last week and shortly before. But the firm put itself in this position over time with all of its leverage and there is ultimately no one to blame here but Bear Stearns itself, and its management that granted this.
