Having had a day to ruminate about the Open Source Business Conference 2008, a few key takeaways advocate themselves. It was by far the best OSBC yet, with a far more diverse audience and talking faculty that we’ve had before. This naturally leads to a diverse set of “conclusions” arising from the event:

  1. Enterprises love open source but the business models necessary to fuel both their happiness and that of the vendors still need a lot of work.

Jon Williams of Kaplan Test suggested in his keynote, as Dirk Hohndel captures, that the more happy he is with his commercial open-source software, the less likely he’ll be to pay for it. Why? Because his developers will acquire the expertise over time to support themselves and because the product will mature to the point that support will be less necessary.

Open source has clearly gone mainstream when religions begin requiring it on employment applications.

It does my heart good to see my church putting its tithing dollars to work in an inspired cause: open source. A friend just sent me a job posting on the LDS Church’s website calling for a Linus Torvalds-like figure to lead open-source development efforts for the LDS Church and its IT projects.

You might not want those missionaries knocking on your door, but you’ve got to admit that every religion needs at least one Linus Torvalds. :-)

Go to the LDS Church’s employment site and type “open source” into the search box. You’ll find several stipulations for open-source savvy engineers (including someone familiar with Hyperic - got something to tell me, Javier? Is my tithing paying for your Wii addiction?), but this is the one that I find fascinating (and encouraging):

Technical Program Manager - Community Development

Description:

This person has the exciting responsibility in leading the Church’s efforts to establish community software development efforts. The Community Development Program Manager will work with key stakeholders to identify opportunities to leverage community resources to design, develop and maintain software applications that can be made generally available. Success in these endeavors will greatly accelerate the development and proliferation of technology that can be used by church members and local leaders.

Earlier this week, Karelia released Sandvox 1.2.7. If you’re unfamiliar, Sandvox is a great WYSIWYG website development application. It’s really fun to use, and features .Mac and iLife integration, templates you’ll actually want to put up on your site and a great user interface (in fact, it was the runner up in Apple’s 2007 Design Awards for Best Mac OS X User Experience).

Version 1.2.7 is a minor update, but includes some important changes, like

  • Improvements to iMedia Browser, including new movie thumbnailing code
  • Graphical Title Text replacement now works again under Leopard
  • Updates to the Digg pagelet

There’s more, of course, and you can get the full run down here. Once you’ve got your Sandvox site up, share it at Sandvoxed.

Sandvox now requires 10.4.11 or 10.5.x, is a Universal Binary and comes in both pro ($79US) and “regular” ($49US) versions. Version 1.2.7 is a free upgrade for registered users.

I’ve long preferred OpenOffice for my presentations. It has functionality (like the ability to enter a group of objects I’ve grouped and edit just one of them) that I simply can’t get in Microsoft Office, and the performance is quite good. I’m therefore happy to see version 2.4 hit public release. The good just got better, as The Register reports:

The OpenOffice.org 2.4 database, Base, now supports MS-Access 2007, while abilities for MySQL, Oracle JDBC and native HSQL databases have been improved.

PDF handling has been improved with five export options, and Writer has been rounded out with improved “find and replace”, new keyboard short cuts, and the ability to set options for printing hidden or place-holder text and for following hyperlinks.

Both Red Hat and Oracle had excellent quarters, but Oracle’s was apparently not “excellent” enough for Wall Street’s tastes. Its shares and the market went south on fears that technology spending is in decline. Apparently Wall Street didn’t notice that Red Hat actually raised its fiscal year 2009 guidance. …
