Apparently, only Charlie Babcock at InformationWeek really listened to the music selected for the Open Source Business Conference earlier this week. In an excellent article, Charlie walks through Microsoft’s troubled patent claims on open source, and notes its dissonance with the open-source harmony:

There’s a lot of open …

Both Red Hat and Oracle had excellent quarters, but Oracle’s was apparently not “excellent” enough for Wall Street’s tastes. Its shares and the market went south this week on fears that technology spending is in decline.

In addition, Wall Street apparently didn’t notice that Red Hat actually raised its fiscal year 2009 guidance

I hate to keep beating this drum, but I read Stephen O’Grady’s report on Brad Smith’s keynote at the Open Source Business Conference (OSBC) and thought it was worth highlighting. Stephen isn’t prone to exaggeration or zealotry. So when he writes these words, it’s worth considering:

Microsoft has a standing annual legal bill, we’re told, of ~$100 million dollars to defend itself from patent related litigation. Unless the licensing revenue stream easily eclipses that amount, why is the current system worth defending? Why does Microsoft insist on speaking out in defense of a mechanism that appears, if anything, to negatively impact its shareholders? It seems like a flawed equation.

I’ve had my iPhone for a week now and am amazed by how much it has changed the way I use a mobile device. My Blackberry was all work: I used it for email and to read stories on Arsenal. (Yes, that counts as work these days.) The iPhone is much different. There’s so much to do with it. I find that I use it far more, but for less drudgery and more fun.

A bit like how I use my Mac.

I thought I’d compile a list of the five ideal things about the iPhone, and the five worst. It’s not a perfect device by any means. It’s interesting to see that some of the iPhone’s greatest strengths pave the way for its greatest weaknesses.

But first, the good:

  1. The typing on the iPhone is lightning fast. I never would have guessed this, but it’s true. I was pretty fast on my Blackberry 8700 and then 8800, but I’m at least 25 percent faster on the iPhone. I worried about the lack of tactile feedback, but the iPhone gives visual feedback (the key you’re about to hit enlarges to meet your finger) which is arguably better. In addition, it’s very, very smart about correcting misspellings. Often I’ll keep typing, even when I know I made a mistake, because I know the iPhone’s software will correct my mistake for me. It usually does.

The 451 Group just published a “glass half empty” assessment of the open-source database market. One massive takeaway? Open-source databases are widely used, but not yet deeply used.

One of the key findings is that open source software has had a superficial impact on the enterprise database market in that

I’ve long preferred OpenOffice for my presentations. It has functionality (like the ability to enter a group of objects I’ve grouped and edit just one of them) that I simply can’t get in Microsoft Office, and the performance is quite good. I’m therefore happy to see version 2.4 hit public release. The good just got superior, as The Register reports:

The OpenOffice.org 2.4 database, Base, now supports MS-Access 2007, while capabilities for MySQL, Oracle JDBC and native HSQL databases have been improved.

PDF handling has been improved with five export options, and Writer has been rounded out with improved “find and replace”, new keyboard short cuts, and the capability to set options for printing hidden or place-holder text and for following hyperlinks.
