Oops, did you forget to buy a gift for someone? Well, since it’s now Christmas Eve, it’s doubtful that you can still go out and purchase it. Luckily, you probably have the creative skills to come up with a simple yet thoughtful gift. Nothing is more personal than handmade.

Gift Certificate. As long as you can type or write (neatly) on a piece of stiff paper or cardboard the words “The holder of this gift certificate is entitled to one hour of my services free“, you’re in business.

Origami. Nothing makes a boring letter more remarkable than folding it up into origami. Even if you’ve no idea how to do origami, learning it is easier than you may think.

Greeting Card. There’s nothing with being traditional, so there’s nothing wrong with getting a piece of card, neatly folding it in half, and writing or drawing a special greeting on it.

Recording. A video or audio recording of yourself giving a greeting might require something else to view/listen to, but acting remarkably different for the sake of entertainment is always memorable (at least for those who are close to you).

A website. This only applies to those who are proficient in HTML, but they have the ability to easily purchase a domain, build a basic website with some photos the greeting message, and promise to shoulder one year of domain and hosting fees.

There are probably more ideas out there, and all it takes is a tiny imagination to discover and execute them. Do you have any last-minute gift ideas you want to share?

Last year, I wrote about enjoying the holidays, and what it requires:

Before Christmas comes, make sure you’ve finished everything.

Because they’re so close to each other, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be working on the days between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Which is a good thing, because this is a rare oppurtunity to like a week or so with no deadlines to meet.

So finish everything due next year, before the Holidays arrive. Burn the midnight oil if necessary. Because these rest days are meant to be enjoyed. Savor the free time, sleep in, bum around and/or spend quality time with friends and loved ones. [emphasis mine]

But then I realized that there’s no need to work for what’s due next year, particularly on projects that were set up before Christmas came along. I honestly think it’s an unreasonable client who anticipates freelancers to submit something on January 2, because this means that they’re anticipating the contract worker to work during the holidays. But you can’t really blame this kind of employer if they manage to find someone willing to work for them.

I guess I should revise my advice on enjoying the holidays. It still involves doing nothing between Christmas and New Year’s. On top of that however, freelancers should avoid taking projects that force them to work during the holidays in the first place.
